Service Notice For Members Using Third-Party Program, ‘XBLFriends’

Many users have been reporting the inability to use MGC GamerCards after installing a program called ‘XBLFriends’ to their computers.

Unfortunately, this program has a nasty bug that will flood MGC with a number of blank GamerCard requests every single second, generating thousands of requests, and tying up valuable resources. In turn, the only option for our servers to defend itself is by blocking access from that IP address, which will prevent any user from that IP address from using MGC GamerCards at all.

I’ve attempted a few times to contact the author and have him fix this problem, but despite the damage and congestion this causes MGC, this does not seem to be a priority for him. Unfortunately, I must openly discourage users from installing and using this application, and recommend uninstalling it if you are an existing user.

Obviously, this is certainly not what we want. We at MGC always enjoy and encourage third-party websites and services to utilize our GamerCards to enhance their applications, but we’re only equipped to handle valid requests.

If you have installed this application and have been affected by a sudden inability to access GamerCards, you can contact us to have your IP address unblocked.

Please send an email to help [@at@] mygamercard [.dot.] net with the following information:
1) Your GamerTag
2) Your IP Address (You can visit WhatIsMyIP.com to get this information)
3) Your confirmation and acknowledgement that you have uninstalled the ‘XBLFriends’ program from your computer.

You may also use that address for any questions you have about this post. Thank you for using MGC!

I believe the IP Ban only covers the viewing of GamerCards, not the whole site. ;-)

If you should have XBLfriends' user agent (at least partial) from server logfiles, it would be quite easy to block only this program via .htaccess..

  5. Morgon says:

It doesn't use such a User Agent. I do agree that it should, and I'll pass that on to the developer.
